Bringing America Back to God

The election of 1920 set President Warren G. Harding into the Presidential office. He was elected into office after being elected to the Senate in 1914. He followed President Woodrow Wilson’s term, and was left with a good deal of challenges that had to be managed and dealt with.

Harding claimed, "My primary motive in becoming president is to bring America back to God." Warren was wrapped up in scandals. They mostly began with the "Ohio Gang", a group of friends, which were assigned important jobs (Encarta 2). Soon corruption rose. He had to deal with the Tea Pot Dome Scandal. The Tea Pot Dome Scandal was when the secretary of interior, Albert Fall, accepted a bribe for leasing government-owned oil reserves to private companies (Encarta 2). Also, the farm region suffered a severe depression. It caused the Republicans to slip badly in the 1922 Congressional elections. The Senate ended up investing the oil reserves while Harding was visiting Alaska and Canada (Encarta 3).

The Republicans were all about isolation. They did not want America to become "worldly". All of these scandals made the people become restless, and Harding tries to distract the people from the scandals. His main motive was to regulate the people’s behavior, and focus on one model. The model was God.
