African American History 2. The social characteristics of West African society on the eve of European civilization applied to women, spirit possession, family relationships, and slavery. Women were storytellers who educated and initiated the children for the future generations into the culture. Spirit possession was a type of religion which involved tremors and shakes. It helped the dead reach the next realm and had neurophysiologic changes on the person. It helped the person channel their emotions as well. The family relationship of the child was the embodiment of the family into the future. The child is trained and grows into a responsible adult. The women are expected to ensure the continuation of the tribe or family. They are expected to raise the children and handle family and domestic matters. Slavery fostered warfare, expanded servitude within a region and skewed local economies. Slaves were captured, transited, and then sold. 5. The goal of “seasoning” was to make African American bound slaves obedient. Their attitudes and habits were “broken in” to make the slaves better for work. They underwent this process mostly in the Caribbean Islands. © Copyright 2004 PurpleFrenzy.com. All rights reserved
